Priyadarshan (Master director in Malayalam and Hindi) is planning to start a cricket team from Kerala for the next IPL season in 2010, with childhood friend and Malayalam superstar Mohanlal.
IPL is set to add four more teams after two years and now Kerala can hope to be one among them. The growth of the game and realisation of our IPL dream would depend a lot on the support of the Kerala Cricket Association (KCA), especially in providing state-of-the-art facilities,” he said on the sidelines of an interaction with players of ‘City Cricketers’, a leading club here that he has taken over as president. Dr Shashi Tharoor, the new Union Minister of State for External Affairs accepted chairmanship of the club a fortnight ago, while Malayalam superhero Mohanlal is patron of the club, adding to the filmy touch.
Both Priyadarshan and Mohanlal love cricket and are truly raring to have a team for Kerala.
Mohanlal revealed that as a youngster, he used to spend a lot of time watching cricket matches and was a player at school.
Mohanlal may soon approach the Kerala Cricket Association to know about the formalities and may also seek the help of Sashi Tharoor, MP from Thiruvananthapuram.
Two NRIs and a few corporates are willing to fund the project which will cost around Rs 250 crore.
“The KCA (Kerala Cricket Association) will approach the BCCI with our proposal, and if all goes well, we will start our IPL innings next year,” says Priyadarsan.
